Movie Trailer of the Day: A female soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan currently is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The number of assaults in the last decade is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands.

This epidemic of rape within the U.S. military is exposed in The Invisible War, an “incendiary” new investigative documentary from Academy Award-nominated director Kirby Dick.

Winner of the Audience Award at Sundance, the film is in theaters June 22.

[TW: Rape] List of Comedians defending Tosh

stfuconservatives:

abokononist:

sonic-hip-attack:

List of Comedians that are being unapologetically dense about this issue:

  • Jim Norton (“Why is it okay for an actor to play a rapist, but not for a comic to joke about it?”)
  • Louis C.K. (“your show makes me laugh every time I watch it. And you have pretty eyes”)
  • Patton Oswalt (“Wow, @danieltosh had to apologize to a self-aggrandizing, idiotic blogger. Hope I never have to do that (again).”)
  • Dane Cook (“If you journey through life easily offended by other peoples words I think it’s best for everyone if you just kill yourself”)
  • Anthony Jeselnik (“An offended audience member repeating a comedian’s act from memory is worse than, literally, anything”)
  • Stevie Ryan (“Daniel Tosh can’t make a rape joke but Eminem can have hit songs about it? PS. AIDS jokes are funnier”)
  • Doug Stanhope (“You’re hilarious. If you ever apologize to a heckler again I will rape you. #FuckThatPig”) — wow.
  • Opie Radio (“To all the idiots! I completely support Daniel Tosh being a comic in a comedy club! Even if it means rape jokes!”)
  • Kumail Nanjiani (“Two things about the Tosh thing. 1. It was said in the moment and not a pre written thing. 2. If you think he’s pro rape you’re an idiot.”) — this one, though. as though it makes it better that it was an off-the-cuff comment. don’t you see how revealing that is about him and his values?
  • Sarah Beattie (“calm down about rape jokes everyone’s been raped at least once by george lucas”)
  • Doug Benson (“Maybe Daniel Tosh was confused about where he was. He wouldn’t have offended anyone over at the Rape Factory. #ThisTweetWillBeDeletedSoon”)

Just so you have a list and can see how horrible people are all in one place

Goddammit, Louis CK was always my favorite.

Folks, here’s what you can do if you’re disgusted by this:

  • Tweet at the comedian in question. People who are really into tweeting are generally narcissists who check their replies a lot. If you can, resist the urge to tweet “YOU ARE A FUCKING SEXIST PIG, CRACKER VON PATRIARCH!” and say something like “Wow, didn’t expect you to be a rape apologist. Disappointing.” or “All of your best bits are the ones that DON’T induce PTSD in your audience.” or “Why do you feel the need to defend someone who suggested a woman get raped? For real? #gross”
  • Tweet about the show. Companies now rely more on social media “impressions” than things like ratings. If lots of those impressions are negative, they’ll notice.
  • Mention it on their Facebook page. Again, impressions.
  • Unfollow their Twitter/FB page/tumblr. Even if you can’t resist the urge to check it every now and then, social media numbers matter a LOT to celebs, especially comedians.
  • In the future, if they announce new projects, tweet something like “Well, I was gonna buy @PattonOswalt’s new DVD, but since he felt the need to defend a rape apologist, I guess I feel the need to just watch it on YouTube.” Hit ‘em where it hurts: their bottom line.

I, like many others, am only now learning of the horrific crime(s) in Steubinville, Ohio.

[Triggering photo removed]

“In August of 2012, a 16 year old girl incurred the wrath of her ex-boyfriend and he initiated a revenge that resulted in her being unconscious, dragged from party to party, and being stripped, subject to rape, forced oral copulation, sodomy and being urinated on by multiple people. A 12 minute video was recorded and posted via social media. The police have since “lost” this video. (Please note that this pathetic excuse for a man now attends Ohio State University on a scholarship.)

During this assault, witnesses made light of the incident and posted pictures to instagram, and joked, along with “play by play” accounts on twitter. One such example was “No one sleeps through a wang in the butt.” A small number of tweets have been preserved in various news articles, but there were a great deal more than is currently being shown.

The girl who originally tried to preserve the evidence in screenshots has been sued for defamation and her posted evidence has since been taken down. Three others are also being sued for defamation.

Recently, there was a hearing for two teen athletes, where they are being held, without bail, for rape, though the kidnapping charges have been dropped. Overwhelming community support showed up, including school officials, were in the courtroom FOR THE RAPISTS. This is where it gets bad.

The coach, the volunteer coach, and many people in the community are blaming gang rape of an unconscious girl on the girl, herself. No one is coming forward to help law enforcement. The local prosecutor’s son is on the football team.

This is not an isolated incident. More girls have come forward, including a 14 year old girl. Even worse, one of the official’s email accounts has a number of pictures of young girls in various compromising positions, demonstrating that this has happened many times before and is accepted within this community.

Worse, the people who did this have been referring to themselves as “RAPE CREW.”

There are multiple conflicts of interest in their local justice system and they have paid out a number of settlements for police misconduct. Corruption is rampant as a result of these conflicts of interest, and many people in local government, along with school officials have been making a concerted effort to cover this up.” (distonanced)

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR SEXUAL VIOLENCE.

I’ve been watching interviews and reports on the rapes occurring in New Delhi with disgust, and now I find that a town in the United States has the SAME mindset - that it was the woman’s fault - that the men shouldn’t be dishonored or punished for what they have done…

And…

I just quit.  I am sickened.

I know we’ve been having a good time on the dash, but I NEED like everyone to boost the hell out of this, please?

I really don’t understand why more people aren’t angry about this. This is a working link: sign petition

SIGNAL BOOSTING AGAIN. THE WORKING LINK TO THE PETITION HAS BEEN ADDED. SIGN IT. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A US CITIZEN, JUST LEAVE THE ZIP CODE BLANK.

Imma leave the room before I punch a hole through the computer screen.

I read the whole anon file on this case (and it was truly sickening) but this is the first time I’ve seen this petition going around. I’m definitely signing it and simply raising awareness of this absolutely disgusting and heinous case!

TRIGGER WARNING.

“RAPE CREW” COACH BLATANTLY DENIES COVER-UP, BLAMES “ANONYMOUS” FOR PERPETUATING FALSE CLAIMS

Two football players kidnapped a sixteen-year-old girl who was possibly drugged and too drunk to resist and took her to several parties where she was then raped. THE EVENT WAS EVEN LIVE-TWEETED BY THE PEOPLE INVOLVED.

From the NYT website: “Twitter posts, videos and photographs circulated by some who attended the nightlong set of parties suggested that an unconscious girl had been sexually assaulted over several hours while others watched. She even might have been urinated on. In one photograph posted on Instagram by a Steubenville High football player, the girl, who was from across the Ohio River in Weirton, W.Va., is shown looking unresponsive as two boys carry her by her wrists and ankles. Twitter users wrote the words “rape” and “drunk girl” in their posts.”

Local parents and authorities in Steubenville, OH are invested in covering the story up, claiming the girl “made it up” to cover up the fact that she drank too much and was out late, and that it’s ruining their football program - despite the fact that there is evidence of these boys laughing and talking about the rape on video and through social media as it happens. DON’T LET THESE SICK BASTARDS GET AWAY WITH IT JUST BECAUSE THEY’RE PRECIOUS FOOTBALL PLAYERS.

(Sidenote: “Dead” is a euphemism for “drugged”.)

HOW ARE WE AT A POINT WHERE WE WILL DEFEND RAPISTS EVEN WHEN THEY HAVE TWEETED, POSTED A PHOTO, AND RECORDED A VIDEO BLATANTLY ADMITTING - BOASTING ABOUT - THE FACT THAT THEY RAPED SOMEONE? WHAT THE EVER-LOVING FUCK.

VIDEO of the rapists’ gloating. Warning: the video is disgusting. In the twelve-minute original, some fucked up shit is said, but what stuck out the most was when someone got disgusted and went to go check on the rape victim and asked Michael (the guy telling all the jokes), “What if that was your daughter/sister?” And he replied, “I wouldn’t care.”

Right now, a 12 year old girl from GA’s rapist is apparently being shielded by her town.

kaffeinated:

  • This is because his brother (or close relative) is apparently a councilman in Waynesboro, GA, and apparently justice for the connected is different than justice for the masses.
  • Anonymous members of law enforcement have informed the parents that the case will be buried unless they do something because their hands are tied.
  • Although the rapist is in custody, he is completely shielded from all normal channels of inquiry. They will not release the names of the perpetrator to the parents, and have not offered any prosecution options.
  • No public record of the rapists arrest or Identity has been allowed, to this point.

And, as a side note: Waynesboro seems to have missed the fact that her parents grew up with a media strategist who will work this for free until justice is served. My thoughts on that can be found here.

I might need your help with this one, tumblrverse. Y’all know how to dish justice, and I’m counting on that.

UPDATE: As preliminary media attention is being brought to the case, we have received another anonymous update from local law enforcement. These are the leads we have, though we are apparently being blocked from confirming them officially.

  • The perpetrator’s name is apparently “Tommy,” a 55 year old black male from the local area. This information is insufficient to properly identify him for prosecution. Waynesboro seems to still be obfuscating his records, we are attempting to confirm.
  • He was arrested in Richmond County, GA. Saturday afternoon he was then turned over to Burke County, GA — apparently his brother’s area of influence.
  • We are told that his brother may be local councilman James “Chick” Jones, chair of the Waynesboro Utilities Committee. We are in the process of confirming this, and will contact Mr. Jones for comment shortly. We have emailed Mr. Jones for comment, copied after the break.

Mr. Jones,

CNN’s Candy Crowley began her breaking news report by showing Lipps handing down the sentence and telling CNN reporter Poppy Harlow that she “cannot imagine” how emotional the sentencing must have been.

Harlow explained that it had been “incredibly difficult” to watch “as these two young men — who had such promising futures, star football players, very good students — literally watched as they believed their life fell apart.”

“One of the young men, Ma’lik Richmond, as that sentence came down, he collapsed,” the CNN reporter recalled, adding that the convicted rapist told his attorney that “my life is over, no one is going to want me now.”

At that point, CNN played video of Richmond crying and hugging his lawyer in the courtroom.

“I was sitting about three feet from Ma’lik when he gave that statement,” Harlow said. “It was very difficult to watch.”

Candy then asked CNN legal contributor Paul Callan what the verdict meant for “a 16 year old, sobbing in court, regardless of what big football players they are, they still sound like 16 year olds.”

“What’s the lasting effect though on two young men being found guilty juvenile court of rape essentially?” Crowley wondered.

“There’s always that moment of just — lives are destroyed,” Callan remarked. “But in terms of what happens now, the most severe thing with these young men is being labeled as registered sex offenders. That label is now placed on them by Ohio law.”

“That will haunt them for the rest of their lives.”

In a shocking March 20 blog post titled “Censorship, Environmentalism and Steubenville,” University of Rochester economics professor Steven Landsburg questioned the harm of raping an unconscious woman who may not remember the attack, and wondered why rapists should not “reap the benefits” of women’s bodies.
Landsburg is using his position as a professor of economics to promote rape, and the University is defending his right to do so. We demand he be fired immediately!

Landsburg’s pro-rape argument is uniquely sickening — he’s saying that rape is a net benefit to society as long as the victim is unconscious, because an unconscious victim is not negatively impacted by rape whereas the rapist benefits. He then argues that unconscious-victim rape should be outright legalized, because this would create an incentive for rapists to render victims “safely” unconscious before raping them.
This guy is a grade-A sicko.

Even putting aside his idea that mental trauma < physical trauma (which is a pretty big thing to ignore), does he not understand how rape works? Does he not understand at the very least the potential physical repercussions (pregnancy, bleeding, infection, inflammation, etc.)? Even if his thesis - that physical trauma is more important than mental - was correct, rendering someone unconscious and raping them is far from the “safe” situation he seems to think it is.
AND THAT’S NOT EVEN GOING INTO HIS IDEA THAT MENTAL TRAUMA IS SOMEHOW THE SAME THING AS BEING REALLY ANNOYED BY SOMETHING
OR THAT BODILY INTEGRITY SHOULDN’T BE RESPECTED BECAUSE “LIGHT PENETRATES ME ALL THE TIME”
